A big black cat spent much of Monday 19 October on top of a power pole on Woodsdale Road in Lake Country, British Columbia, Castanet reported. A crowd gathered to watch.
“The cat’s face was within about an inch of the live wire throughout most of the day,” said Farrah Cannan, who lives nearby. “There was a lot of concern throughout the day that he was going to touch the wire and be electrocuted.”
BC Hydro crews came earlier in the day but could not coax it down. Some time before 6 in the evening they cut the power to keep it safe, which left 572 customers without electricity.
Six workers and two trucks were there that evening, Cannan said, and they put food on top of the pole. “The cat was fed, and they got very, very close to the cat,” she said. Then it got scared and jumped.
“Underneath the hydro pole, there was one guy who was really kind of the hero of the night,” Cannan said. He caught the cat and broke its fall.
The cat jumped out of his arms and ran off. BC Hydro’s incident record says the power was back on by 7:34 that evening.
Carry a story in five words
We run a game called Long Story Short: one real news sentence a day, and you keep the five words that carry it. Today’s is below. Do play.
How to play
One real news sentence. The job is to keep the five words that carry the story and let the rest go, then guess. Blue means the right word in the right place, orange the right word in the wrong place.
Yesterday: About three kilometres out in an Australian bay, a kangaroo was swimming when a fishing crew rescued it through their boat’s sea door; back ashore, it hopped away. The five were fishing crew rescued swimming kangaroo.
